As the Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) integration standard takes the world by storm, Strata Health has been a pioneer amongst cutting-edge companies adopting this emerging standard for exchanging healthcare information electronically.

Using the FHIR standard, Strata Health’s intelligent technology rapidly allocates specialist appointments to clients. The FHIR implementation allows users to quickly create patient records, manage patient encounters, input clinical data to match patients to appropriate specialists, and identifies the appropriate priority for completed referrals.

Strata is processing 12,000 FHIR messages per month, with over 175,000 total messages sent to date. As a result of Strata’s FHIR integration, more than 70,000 patients have received timely and optimal specialist appointments.

The 2018 FHIR North Code Camp, hosted by Mohawk College in Hamilton Ontario, focused on advancing early adoption of new upcoming FHIR standards in the Ontario health care space. Software vendors were encouraged to implement a proof of concept interface, in support of the Canadian Draft eReferral Specifications currently under development. Strata Health and Caredove successfully demonstrated FHIR, and SMART on FHIR interoperability, while participating in this Code Camp.

“Strata Health clearly sees the adoption of FHIR in all of its global markets accelerating,” explains Vaughan van der Merwe, Strata Health’s Vice President of IT. “As a result of the continued focus on providing robust, flexible and sustainable interconnectivity, I expect FHIR to replace many of our existing legacy interfaces, and becoming the de facto integration standard at Strata Health.”

Strata Health is actively expanding its FHIR library with projects underway within Quebec, Ontario, Alberta, and the UK.
